Ice Dyeing-(approximately 1.5 hours)

Novice-This class is good for beginning dyers and requires no discharge solution, so is appropriate for those with respiratory issues.

For this technique, a blank scarf is soaked in vinegar water and folded, twisted, or scrunched into a 3-dimensional form. It is covered with ice and dye powder or dye concentrate is randomly applied.  When the ice melts, the scarf is rinsed and a beautiful pattern is revealed. This scarf must be picked up the next day as the ice must melt completely before rinsing.

Honeycomb Shibori-(approximately 2 hours)

Novice-This class is good for the novice dyer. No discharge solution is used so it is suitable for those who may have respiratory issues.

Honeycomb shibori is sometimes called pearls.  The scarf is under-dyed a base color, wrapped around a 1/2 inch diameter rope, and dyed a second color. The result is a beautiful honeycomb pattern with an ombre effect.

Itajime Shibori (fold and clamp)-(approximately 2.5 hours)

Novice-This class is good for the novice dyer, however, discharge solution is required so it is not suitable for those with respiratory issues.

Itajime is a traditional shibori technique. A scarf is under-dyed a base color  and folded either symmetrically or asymmetrically. The folded silk is sandwiched between wood or tile shapes and held in place with clamps.  The  scarf is discharged and then dyed a second color while the shapes are still attached creating interesting geometric patterns.

Arashi Shibori-(approximately 3 hours)

Intermediate-This class requires some manual dexterity and hand strength; wrapping requires a degree of patience. The discharge solution used in this class may not be suitable for anyone with respiratory problems.

The scarf is under-dyed a base color and accordion folded.  It is then wrapped diagonally around a wine bottle or PVC pipe, bound with carpet thread, and compressed.  Some of the color is discharged and new color applied. It may be left to air dry in order to make semi-permanent pleats or removed from the cylinder, rinsed and pressed dry. Pleated scarves must be picked up a few days after the class.
